EECM Impact Fall 2009 : Page 1
Fall 2009 United by Faith. Dedicated to Service. EECM Impact East End Cooperative Ministry FedEx Volunteer Voices FedEx Delivers for EECM “It is always a rewarding experience for me to attend a volunteer event. Hearing Pam’s story and those who have come through EECM programs and are now employed by EECM is truly inspirational.” -Jane Milburn, FedEx Ground “I was privileged to have the opportunity to help EECM. It felt odd receiving so many thanks from those on staff who do this on a daily basis as a life’s calling. You all are the ones that deserve the real ‘thanks.’” -Steve Reese, FedEx Ground “While waiting at Bridge House to start our painting, I watched a man walk into Kenny’s office and take a seat. Then I heard Kenny say, ‘So you want to get sober?’ I am convinced this man is braver than I can even imagine to be. I realized then that Bridge House is an important step for these men to a better life.” -Jennifer Nicholson, FedEx Ground On September 15th, EECM encountered a tidal wave of purple t-shirts as over 30 volunteers from the FedEx family descended on our programs. This was part of the 5th Annual FedEx Cares Week, involving 4000 volunteers in 20 countries. Luckily, FedEx sent us the best of the best! The morning started with a kickoff rally in the Soup Kitchen dining room. In addition to enjoying coffee and pastries, the volunteers met Pam Jenkins, EECM’s PennFree Program Coordinator. She spoke of her past troubles with alcohol addiction, her time on the streets, and how EECM helped her survive and persevere, ultimately giving her a job and a chance to start over again. After Pam motivated the troops, it was time to go to work. The volunteers fanned out, completing projects from painting the Men’s Shelter and the Soup Kitchen dining room to weed whacking the EECM parking lot. On this extraordinary day of service, FedEx also provided a catered lunch at the Soup Kitchen for our regular “customers”, and used the opportunity to mingle and chat with them,as well as speaking with various EECM staff and board members. Doug Davidson, who works for FedEx Services, summed it up best when he said at the end of the day, “The East End is trying to stand up again. With the help from EECM, there is hope. Seeing and being part of EECM’s positive spirit and force in the community, there is hope that this renewal will continue.”
